Update-FSMB Annual Meeting—Dr. Raju

Update-Utilization of Medical Assistants

• Our office has received numerous requests for clarification or modifications to the board policy on utilization of unlicensed medical assistants (UMA).  These issues include:
  • A representative from DOH asks if for OBS if a UMA may, initiate a time out, act as a circulator, monitor patients during the surgical procedure.
  • Conducting point of care tests under standing orders.
  • Ordering and performing noninvasive ophthalmic imaging. Ordering and instilling eyedrops in ophthalmological practices (note- ordering seems to be specifically prohibited by state law while section 6527(9) of the Education law governs instilling eye drops)
  • Dispensing and applying OTC DME
  • Application of wound dressings
  • Uncontrolled bleeding protocol
  • Pre-procedural preparation and disinfection
  • Nerve conduction studies
