  • As a licensed podiatrist, you should assess and renew competence throughout your career through self-evaluation, supervision and consultation.
  • You should expand your knowledge and skills during your career through continuing education and training (many specialty credentials have specific continuing education requirements). Be sure to document all activities.
  • Before using a modality not included in your professional training, you may choose to complete a program(s) of study related to the modality at a recognized institution and/or with recognized authority to gain competency.
  • You are required to complete and document at least 50 hours of continuing podiatric medical education during each three-year registration period.
    1. At least two-thirds (35 hours) of your continuing education coursework must be in the areas of podiatric medicine and surgery (Category A);
    2. No more than one-third (15 hours) of your coursework may be in the areas of health sciences or in areas dealing with podiatric practice issues such as ethics or risk management.
    3. A maximum of 25 home study hours (either Category A or B) will be accepted in any three-year registration period.
    4. Continuing education credits for participation in podiatric residency programs will be awarded at the discretion of the State Board.
  • Retain records from workshops and conferences you have attended for at least six years. The State Board conducts random audits of licensed podiatrists to confirm compliance with mandatory continuing education. Unless you are selected for an audit, you do not need to submit your continuing education records to the State Board.
