
A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides patient care under the supervision of an RN, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, physician, dentist, or podiatrist. They provide bedside nursing care and emotional support to patients. They also provide medical procedures, such as administering medications and sterile dressing changes, as prescribed.

Graduate from an LPN education program, which usually takes about a year to complete. LPN education programs are offered at many community colleges, vocational colleges, and BOCES. LPN education programs in New York State must be approved by the New York State Education Department.
