License Requirements

Our career profiles outline major license requirements. Some professions have multiple pathways to licensure. You may select a profession from our list of licensed professions for a detailed description of requirements.

Salary and Projected Growth

Most salary data and employment projections are taken from the Federal Occupational Outlook Handbook (2016-2026, U.S. Department of Labor) and the New York State Department of Labor’s employment projections (2016-2026). When necessary, we may provide data from other sources, such as the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), national or state professional societies, and commercial employment websites.

For more information on employment in New York State, including long- and short-term projections, regional data, and "jobs in demand," visit the New York State Department of Labor's Employment Projections page.

Note: salary and employment rates are affected by many variables, including the length and quality of your experience, regional labor markets, and the nature of the employer.

Where Could I Work?

The work settings we list are typical of the profession, but there may be opportunities to use your skills in other settings.

Interests and Abilities

Your interests and abilities in the listed areas will help you build a solid foundation in your chosen profession. Of course, your interests may change as you learn and explore new skills and disciplines!

Professional Skills

Significant technical knowledge is needed to earn a license and practice a profession, but these personal skills and attributes will contribute to your professional practice as well.
