The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

Chiropractors treat symptoms and conditions as they relate to the spine, emphasizing the dependency of health on the correct functioning of the central nervous system. Chiropractors:

  • use their hands, instruments, diagnostic imaging procedures, and lab tests to detect nerve interference
  • adjust misaligned vertebrae (bones of the spinal column) and other bones to restore correct functioning
  • may use electrical stimulation, acupressure, massage, ultrasound, deep heat, hot and cold packs, traction, and support devices
  • provide guidance on lifestyle habits, posture, exercise, diet, and stress.

Education Requirements

Preprofessional: at least 90 semester hours of college study. Coursework should include a minimum of 24 semester hours in life and physical science courses, which can include but not be limited to:  general biology, human anatomy, physiology, general chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biomechanics and kinesiology. At least half of these courses should include a lab component. 

Professional: graduate from a Doctor of Chiropractic program accredited by the Council of Chiropractic Education, or graduate from an unaccredited chiropractic program and complete additional coursework through an accredited Chiropractic program.
