The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

Histology is the microscopic examination of cell and tissue anatomy in humans, animals and plants. A Histotechnologist prepare very thin slices of human tissue and analyze those samples through a microscope. Their findings help medical professionals to diagnose illness and disease. These professionals also maintain laboratory equipment, records, and quality assurance systems. A Histotechnician perform tests under appropriate supervision.

Education Requirements

Histotechnologist- Bachelor's or higher degree in a Department-registered Histotechnology licensure program, or the equivalent
OR
Bachelor's or higher degree in natural sciences AND completion of a licensure qualifying program or accredited program.
OR
Bachelor's degree in natural sciences and two years of acceptable experience working in a clinical laboratory while licensed as a histotechnician.

Histotechnician- Associate’s or higher degree in a Department-registered certified histological technician licensure program, or the equivalent.
