The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

Report to the Legislature and Executive Regarding the Exemption from Licensure for Social Workers, Psychologists and Mental Health Practitioners pursuant to Chapter 57 of the Laws of 2013

Chapter 57 of the Laws of 2013 extended until July 1, 2018 the exemption from licensure as a social worker, psychologist or mental health practitioner those individuals employed in programs that are operated, regulated, approved or funded by certain state or local government agencies. The law also required the State Education Department, in consultation with the affected agencies, professional associations, providers and consumers, to issue a report to the Governor and Legislature regarding the implementation of the law. The report and alternative recommendations from the commissioners of those exempt agencies was transmitted to the Governor, Speaker of the Assembly, Senate President pro tem and chairs of the Senate and Assembly Higher Education Committees on February 3, 2015.
