Certification to Perform Court-Ordered Forensic Custody Evaluations

Chapter 740 of the Laws of 2022 requires that court-ordered forensic evaluations involving child custody and visitation be performed by a psychologist, social worker, or psychiatrist who is licensed in New York State. Licensees must periodically complete required training to perform such services.

Eligible professionals must complete a training program to earn the certification. The law charges the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence with administering the training.

The New York State Education Department does not administer this requirement. For more information about the training, please see this flyer from the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. Questions may be directed to: FCECertification@opdv.ny.gov.
