Chapter 446 of the 2022 laws amended the requirements for licensure in the clinical laboratory professions:
- Clinical Laboratory Technologist
- Cytotechnologist
- Clinical Laboratory Technician
- Certified Histological Technicians (now Histotechnician).
The Board of Regents adopted regulations to implement this new law on an emergency basis, effective January 17, 2023.
In addition to a variety of other changes, the law and regulations provide alternatives to professional education for licensure, including graduation from an accredited program acceptable to NYSED or, verification of current certification by a national certification organization acceptable to NYSED or current licensure in a jurisdiction acceptable to NYSED. The alternatives in the table below will now be acceptable pathways to meet the requirement; this list will be updated in the coming weeks.
If you applied for licensure previously under the standard pathway but did not meet those requirements, you may apply for licensure under the alternative if you meet one of the criteria below or those listed in the license requirements for your profession. In order to be considered under the alternative, submit the appropriate Form 1A which is on our website. The Department will reach out to you directly if any additional information is needed to complete your application. If you withdrew your application and received a refund of registration fees, you must submit the regular Form 1 and pay the licensure and first registration fee.
