The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

How can I locate a licensed marriage and family therapist?

When seeking help, consider the types of available therapies and ask if the practitioner has been trained specifically in the therapy being practiced.

  • check with people you know for recommendations
  • your primary care provider may be able to direct you to a marriage and family therapist
  • professional marriage and family therapy organizations may have a list of members and their specialties
  • the yellow pages of your telephone book may include a listing of "marriage and family therapists" or "psychotherapists"

The State Board for Mental Health Practitioners cannot direct you to a marriage and family therapist.
