How can I locate a licensed creative arts therapist?

The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

When seeking help, consider the types of available therapies and ask if the practitioner has been trained specifically in the therapy being practiced.

check with people you know for recommendations
your primary care provider may be able to direct you to a creative arts therapist
professional creative arts therapy organizations may have a list of members and their specialties
the yellow pages of your telephone book may include a listing of "creative arts therapists" or "psychotherapists"

The State Board for Mental Health Practitioners cannot direct you to a creative arts therapist.
