The New York State Education Department (“SED”) Office of the Professions (“OP”) is alerting everyone to a vishing scam that has been brought to our attention. Phishing—or “vishing”—scams impersonate SED employees or websites attempting to collect licensure and personal information from the licensee. If you receive an inquiry which you believe to be suspicious do not provide any information. To verify if the inquiry was from OP, contact us directly. You may report any suspicious communication received to the Federal Trade Commission.

Organizations permitted by New York Law to offer Occupational Therapy Continuing Competency Courses (CE) to Licensees

New York State Law allows the following organizations to offer CE to licensees.

A sponsor of coursework or training that is approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), or the New York State Occupational Therapy Association (NYSOTA), or the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), or the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), or an equivalent organization as determined by the State Education Department.

OR

Postsecondary institutions, provided that such approval is limited only to the offering of courses in programs that are registered by the State Education Department, or in equivalent programs that are accredited by an acceptable accrediting agency.

OR

Postsecondary institutions, or a consortium of such institutions, that offer programs that are registered as leading to either licensure in occupational therapy or authorization to practice as an occupational therapy assistant, or equivalent professional education programs accredited by an acceptable accrediting agency, for credit and noncredit offerings.

OR

An organization that is approved by the State Education Department to offer CE to licensees, as described in the next section.
