Delivery and/or Use of Oxygen Equipment

Law, rules and regulations, not Alerts, specify the requirements for practice and violating them constitutes professional misconduct. Not adhering to this Alert may be interpreted as professional misconduct only if the conduct also violates pertinent law, rules and regulations.

A physician's order is required to place a patient on oxygen or adjust oxygen settings. The placement of a patient on oxygen or the removal of a patient from oxygen treatment, the adjustment and/or the changing of settings of oxygen equipment, and the administration and assessment of oxygen treatment must be performed by a licensed respiratory therapist/technician or another authorized practitioner, under a physician's order.  Unlicensed persons may only connect or disconnect portable or institutional oxygen tanks for the purpose of transporting a patient, but they may not connect or disconnect the oxygen tanks while the patient is in transit. In addition, unlicensed persons may deliver and/or mechanically set up oxygen equipment, when a physician's order is in place, but may not adjust or change settings on the equipment.
