Mental Health Counseling
NYS Registered Education Programs
- The following schools offer programs that lead to licensure in mental health counseling in New York State.
- Effective January 1, 2010, the education requirements increase to 60 semester hours; graduates of 48-semester hour programs must receive the degree and apply for licensure before January 1, 2010. The experience and examination requirements may be satisfied after that date.
- Verification of the education program must be submitted by the school on Form 2 and indicate the degree title/major specified for licensure in the profession.
- An applicant must complete the program and earn the advanced degree named here after the date of registration.
- The education of an individual who completed a program before it was registered as licensure-qualifying must be individually evaluated.
- A graduate of a program outside of NY must be individually evaluated to determine if the individual has completed a program that is equivalent to a licensure-qualifying program, as determined by the Department.

The following 48-semester hour programs must be completed by December 31, 2009 and the student must apply for licensure by that date. Applicants after January 1, 2010 must complete a 60-semester hour program in mental health counseling for licensure.
